Kisah ini diceritakan oleh pahlawan nasional Indonesia, Abdurrahman Baswedan. Pada 1945, Baswedan dan Sultan HB IX sedang hadir di sidang KNIP (Komite Nasional Indonesia Pusat) di Malang.
Hari itu cuaca membuat siapapun malas mendengarkan rapat. Rintik hujan malam hari begitu dingin. Sultan HB IX yang sebatas anggota dan hanya berdiam mendengarkan paparan sidang lantas bosan. Dia rupanya hendak keluar dari ruangan.
“Sri Sultan kelihatan kesal, bosan, dan kedua kakinya diluruskan. Begitu melihat Baswedan, Sultan langsung berdiri dan mendekatinya “Saudara Baswedan, ayo kita keluar!” kata Baswedan, dikutip dari buku Masa Lalu Selalu Aktual (2007).
Baswedan yang juga merasakan hal sama langsung menyetujui ajakan Sultan HB IX. Toh, dia juga sungkan menolak ajakan Raja Jawa. Namun, Baswedan tak mengetahui bakal diajak ke mana. Baru satu dua langkah, Baswedan terkejutnya saat tahu kalau dia diajak minum kopi di warung pinggir jalan.
“Keduanya lalu memasuki sebuah warung kecil di pinggir jalan yang hanya diterangi sentir. Mereka memesan kopi panas dan makan dua pisang goreng,” tulis A.R Baswedan.
Sikap ini jelas berbanding terbalik dengan harta yang dimiliki Sultan HB IX. Sebagai wawasan, Sultan Hamengkubuwana IX merupakan penguasa Yogyakarta sejak 1940. Dia praktis menjadi salah satu orang terkaya di Indonesia karena memperoleh harta banyak dari warisan dan sistem feodalisme kerajaan.
Tak diketahui pasti berapa kekayaannya, tapi dia tercatat sejarah sebagai sosok dermawan yang kerap membagi-bagikan harta. Ketika awal kemerdekaan, misalnya, dia menyumbang uang 6,5 juta gulden ke pemerintah dan 5 juta gulden untuk rakyat yang menderita. Nominal segitu setara Rp20-30 miliar pada masa sekarang.
Dengan kehormatan setinggi itu dan harta melimpah, tentu bisa saja Sultan HB IX pergi ke tempat mahal. Namun, dia tak terlena dan lebih memilih ngopi di pinggir jalan dengan kondisi gelap gulita. Selain bersama A.R Baswedan, momen kesederhanaan Raja Jawa itu pun terekam oleh banyak orang.
Pernah suatu waktu Sri Sultan juga jajan di pinggir jalan. Hal ini diceritakan buku Takhta untuk Rakyat: Celah-Celah Kehidupan Sultan Hamengkubuwono IX (1982).
Pada 1946, Sri Sultan tercatat pernah beli es gerobakan di pinggir jalan depan Stasiun Klender, Jakarta. Kala itu, cuaca sangat panas dan Sultan butuh minuman segar. Bisa saja dia pergi ke restoran dan jajan di sana, tapi dia ogah dan memilih minum es di pinggir jalan sebab jaraknya lebih dekat.
